Meeting of Somalia’s parliament delayed over potential no-confidence vote

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Speaker of Somalia’s parliament Adan Mohamed Nur delayed a crucial session scheduled for Monday due to a request from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Caasimada Online news website reported.

It came after reports emerged on Sunday that dozens of MPs were drafting a motion of no-confidence to vote out the current Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre whose government has been accused of incompetence.

Chaos broke out in parliament on Sunday after Barre’s government dispatched the Minister of Internal Security to address the legislative body, in what MPs said was an attempt to dictate to parliament on its day-to-day operations and divert attention from summoning the Premier.

Local media reported that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud approached some of the MPs proposing the no-confidence motion with promises of ministerial and ambassadorial appointments as well as payment of large sums of cash if they withdraw the move.
