MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least two people were killed and two others wounded when mortar shells landed on areas near the presidential palace in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Tuesday, Caasimada Online news website reported.
Explosions from mortar bombs landing on the city’s highly-protected green-zone were heard shortly after morning prayers, days after security was tightened for the July 1 Independence Day celebrations.
A stray mortar round killed a Quran teacher and his daughter in Waberi district and wounded two other members of his family, relatives told local media.
Al-Qaeda-aligned Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they had targeted the presidential palace.
