Somalia’s cabinet appoints new army chief

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s cabinet on Monday approved the appointment of Ibrahim Sheikh Muhyadin as the new chief of the army, replacing General Odowa Yusuf Rage, who held the post for years.

The new chief previously held a number of posts within the army, including the commander of the presidential guards, Somali Prime Minister’s office said in a statement.

It came after calls for the government to appoint a new army chief in an attempt to prevent growing Al-Shabaab attacks on bases housing Somali troops in south and central Somalia.
