Blast hits vehicle carrying soldiers in Kenya’s Lamu County – police

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – A roadside blast targeted a vehicle carrying officers with Kenya’s General Service Unit (GSU) in Lamu County amid growing Al-Shabaab attacks in the East African country, Nation Africa reported on Sunday.

The vehicle was traveling between Pandaguo and Witu areas in the region when it ran over an IED, Lamu Deputy County Commissioner told Nation Africa, adding that several officers had been injured as a result of the morning attack.

Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had killed 25 soldiers in two separate roadside bomb explosions in Lamu County. The group said the first assault targeted a GSU vehicle while the other hit a KDF military vehicle sent as reinforcements.

A number of Kenyan soldiers have been killed and many more wounded in increasing militant attacks in Kenya’s Coast and Northeastern provinces over the past weeks.

In a statement on Monday, Al-Shabaab threated retaliation against a recent Kenyan air raid that had destroyed the headquarters of Hormuud Telecommunications company in Sakow town in south Somalia.
