MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –Ethiopia has pulled out dozens of Tigrayan officers with its troops under AMISOM mission in Somalia as conflict in the country’s north spirals out of control.
In the past few days, dozens of Tigrayan officers at a number of military bases in south and central Somalia have been pulled back after they had been identified as belonging to the ethnic group.
Military sources confirmed that ENDF commanders had been ordered to identify Tigrayan officers among its troops serving the AMISOM mission helping the Somali federal government which faces attacks from Islamist militants.
The move comes a week after Ethiopia pulled out nearly 3,000 non-AMISOM troops from Somalia to participate in Abiy’s push to quell Tigray leaders who had controlled the country for decades before the current Prime Minister came to office in 2018.
Garrisons of multiple military camps in Gedo, Bay, Bakol and Hiran have been reduced in recent days and the Ethiopian military have yet to give details of the motive behind withdrawing these troops from Somalia.
