ADDIS ABABA (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s government plans to set up a “transitional administration” in parts of Tigray after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed claimed that federal troops “liberated” cities in the west of the restive region.
The federal government troops will bring the criminal junta to justice in no time, state media quoted Defense Minister Kenea Yadeta as saying on Thursday, urging Tigrean forces to surrender or fight against their leaders.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on Thursday that the military had defeated local forces in the west of Tigray State, accusing his foes of atrocities as the fighting raging in the north of the country enters its 9th day, threatening to destabilize the Horn of Africa nation and create humanitarian crisis.
In addition, the PM disclosed that the military had found bodies of its members who were tied and shot in Tigray.
Air strikes and fighting have left hundreds dead with refugees flooding into Sudan. It is feared that the clashes could stir ethnic divisions amid warnings that the region’s conflict is descending to a point of no-return.
Following reports that food aid and medical supplies had been blocked from Tigray region, Abiy noted “the army is now providing humanitarian assistance and services” in recently liberated areas. “It is also feeding the people,” he added.
More than 10,000 Ethiopian refugees are so far known to have crossed into Sudan since major military operation swung into action last week and aid agencies say the situation in Tigray is becoming dire. Hundreds of thousands of people in the region had been reliant on food aid, even before the conflict.
