MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed denied on Monday that Tigray rebels were able to regroup and wage drawn-out insurgency war, weeks after federal troops took over control of northern region’s capital, Mekelle.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared an end to a month-long offensive on the northern region following the fall of regional capital to federal troops, leaders of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) say they are fighting back on various fronts around Mekelle.
“The criminal clique pushed a patently false narrative that its fighters and supporters are battle-hardened and well-armed, posing the risk of protracted insurgency in the rugged mountains of Tigray,” Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in a statement.
“It also claimed that it has managed to undertake strategic retreat with all its capability and regional government apparatus intact. The reality is the criminal clique is thoroughly defeated and in disarray, with insignificant capability to mount a protected insurgency.”
TPLF rebels have not immediately commented on the Prime Minister’s statement and media has not been able to verify claims by all sides as communications still remain down and journalists denied access to the region.
