ASMARA (Somaliguardian) – Six explosions were heard in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, on Saturday night, despite no immediate confirmation if they were related to the conflict in neighboring Tigray region of Ethiopia.
“At 10:13pm on Nov 28 there were six explosions in Asmara,” the State Department said in a post on Sunday but did not mention the cause or locations of the explosions.
The US urged Americans to “remain situationally aware of the ongoing conflict in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia.” Tigray forces fighting Ethiopian federal troops in the northern region previously fired rockets at Eritrea after TPLF leader accused Asmara of sending its troops over the border to fight Tigrayan forces in support of Abiy Ahmed’s push to quell the rebellious group.
Media have not been able to approach Eritrean government or Tigrayan authorities for comment.
The news of the explosions in Asmara has come a few hours after Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that federal troops had taken control of Mekelle, Tigray’s capital after launching a military offensive.
Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) said it was withdrawing from Mekelle, following a three-week old conflict that risks destabilizing Ethiopia and triggering ethnic frictions.
