MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – There is no room for mediation talks between Somalia and Ethiopia unless the latter retracted its controversial memorandum of understanding with Somaliland that grants Addis Ababa access to a leased land along the Red Sea, the director of communications at the office of Somali President Abdulkadir Ali Dige said on Sunday.
It comes days after reports emerged that Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will be meeting Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Italy for talks facilitated by Rome to end simmering tensions between the neighboring countries. Read More
Ethiopian authorities have earlier defended their sea access deal with Somaliland while Mogadishu continues to describe it as an infringement on its independence, unity and territorial integrity.
Both leaders are in Rome for Italy’s summit with African countries.
