ADDIS ABABA (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s Tigray leader Debretsion Gebremichael said on Friday that popular protests broke out in regional capital, which is home to more than 500,000 people, due to looting by Eritrean soldiers.
Ethiopian federal troops backed by Amhara militias and Eritrean forces had seized control of the northern region’s capital, Mekelle several days ago before the country’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced bringing an end to weeks-long military offensive.
Mr Gebremichael accused Eritrean troops in control of the regional capital of looting civilians but gave no evidence for his accusations.
“Eritrean soldiers are everywhere,” he said, speaking in a text message interview with Reuters News Agency.
“Our people in the town are protesting their looting. We do have captives but we’ll gather more visual evidences.”
Ethiopian government declined to comment on the allegations, the latest in a series of assertions made by Tigray authorities that Eritrea had sent its troops over the border into the northern Ethiopia region.
