MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Multiple explosions has rocked Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu on Thursday night, with gun battles on the streets.
Suspected militants fired RPGs at three security checkpoints in the capital city’s northern districts of Hiliwa and Yaqshid , followed by fierce exchange of gunfire between police and the attackers.
Residents say they saw a number of attackers heading towards security checkpoints before massive explosions and subsequent gunfire were heard much of the capital.
It comes a few days after more than 10 people, among them officials and state employees, were killed in a blast at an ice-cream parlor near the city’s international airport.
Security officials who have spoken to Somaliguardian say there were “attacks on police posts” and the “situation is now under control”.
No one has yet claimed responsibility, but the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab often carries out attacks in Somalia’s capital and other cities in the south of the country, targeting government officials, troops and foreign forces.
