Casualties after two days of clashes in central Somalia’s Mudug region

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Heavy clashes between Somalia’s army bolstered by clan militias and Al-Shabaab militants continued for the second day in the central region of Mudug on Saturday, leaving a number of people dead.

The battles took place on the outskirts of the towns of Amara and Harardhere where the army, under the cover of US air support, conducts operations aimed at dislodging militants from territory still under their control.

In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Defense claimed on Saturday that dozens of insurgents were killed in the operations. Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab armed group said it killed more than a dozen soldiers in the clashes. There has been no independent confirmation of the claims by both sides.

In an attempt to consolidate recent gains, the army and US drones have resumed operations against insurgents in the central regions of Mudug and Galgadud after weeks-long hiatus due to setbacks in the initial phase of the offensive.
