Three car bomb explosions rock central Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Three car bomb explosions rocked central Somalia’s Galgadud and Hiran regions on Thursday as government continues mobilizations for a new offensive against militants.

Two car bombs exploded in the town of Dhusamareb, the capital of the central state of Galmudug early on Thursday morning. The town has been a temporary base for Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for the last two months, where he has been guiding military operations against insurgents.

Another car bomb exploded in the town of Buloburde in Hiran region, just a few days after a truck bomb killed more than a dozen people in the nearby town of Baladweyne.

Casualties by the blasts have not been immediately known.

Al-Qaeda-aligned Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility, saying one of car bombs hit Galmudug presidential palace in Dhusamareb where President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is staying. The group said it killed 16 soldiers and wounded 14 others in the assault.

Somali authorities said the attacks were “foiled”, but did not give further details.
