MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s government on Wednesday launched its first national population and housing census for the first time in nearly 50 years.
Somali authorities said the census will start in major urban areas and will then move to the rural areas in the war-torn nation in a project funded by the United Nations that is set to employ about 30,000 data collectors, who will be trained before the counting begins in 2024.
“We will be counting those who live in the Somali territory and the houses they live in,” Dr. Abdi Ali Ige, head of the Somali population and Housing Census, told VOA Somali Service on Tuesday.
“Before the count is conducted, there will be mapping of the country using satellite imagery of towns and cities, villages, and rural areas,” he added.
