MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the speaker of parliament Sheikh Adan Madobe on Sunday mediated a deal favoring Southwest state leader Abdiasis Laftagaren to end months-long tensions in the region.
The agreement requires that the election of Southwest MPs be held between November and December 2023, indirectly legalizing a disputed one year term extension by the region’s controversial leader.
Mohamud said he wanted to focus on the fight against Al-Shabaab and stressed that continued disputes in the region over the upcoming elections could distract his government from offensive operations against insurgents.
The President has also failed to pick a strong candidate that could help oust Laftagaren in a vote previously scheduled for earlier this year, according to Caasimada Online news website.
