MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Death toll continues to mount in days of escalating violence in the northern Somalia town of Lasanod despite growing local and international calls for calm.
At least one person was killed on Saturday and more than 7 wounded when security forces opened fire on protesters in the restive town, raising the death toll to more than 8 in days of violent demonstrations.
Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, parliament speaker and well-known Somali politicians called for calm and restraint by Somaliland authorities. US and British embassies called on Somaliland leaders to resolve current tensions through dialogue.
Somaliland Information Minister Saleban Ali Kore said on Saturday authorities of the separatist region were not behind spate of assassinations in the town over the past months and promised that the government would take responsibility for restoring peace in the city.
