Int’l Partners Praise Somalia Leaders’ Efforts to Implement Polls Deal

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s international partners welcomed efforts by the Horn of Africa nation’s leaders to implement an election agreement signed between the prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and the presidents of regional states on May 27.

In a statement issued on Friday, the international partners called on the regional leaders to “organize without delay the Upper House elections, which were to have started on July 25”.

It comes after most of the country’s regions delayed Senate elections due to lack of funds, but authorities in southern Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Jubaland conducted the vote this week.

“We urge that remaining work to conclude the electoral process advance quickly and in the same spirit of consensus,” Somalia’s international partners said in a statement.

“Urgent priorities include:  further detailed preparations for electoral security, clarity on measures to secure 30 percent women’s representation in Parliament, and resolution of the dispute over the pending election management committee.”
