ADDIS ABABA (Somaliguardian) – An air strike has killed dozens of people in the town of Tagogon in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, a day after Tigray rebels seized several key cities north of the regional capital Mekelle.
An eyewitness and a medical official told Reuters news agency on Wednesday that the bomb hit a market at around 1pm on Tuesday where dozens of civilians were killed and many more wounded.
It comes after Tigray rebels took over key towns, including Adigrat from allied Eritrean and Ethiopian forces, more than 8 months after the country’s prime minister Abiy Ahmed had ordered a “law enforcement” operation to topple the region’s former ruling party, Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Medical officials said dozens had been killed and the military was blocking ambulances from reaching the scene, according to Reuters.
The government has not immediately commented on the air raid, the latest in a string of attacks targeting civilians in northern Ethiopia’s war-torn region.
