MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Clashes between Somaliland troops and local forces in northern Somalia’s Lasanod town entered the 8th day on Monday, leaving dozens of people dead and many more wounded.
Local media reported that Somaliland troops launched a counter-attack on Monday, triggering fierce clashes. A number of neighborhoods in the town have been shelled, though exact number of casualties has not been immediately known.
On Sunday, Somaliland accused the neighboring Somali federal member state of Puntland of deploying fresh troops along a contested border area to launch an offensive against Somaliland troops there. Authorities in Hargeisa also claimed that Al-Shabaab militants and members of the Somali army were involved in the battles.
Tens of thousands of residents have been forced to flee their neighborhoods since the fighting erupted. Local officials have accused Somaliland troops of indiscriminately shelling residential areas and public places, including hospitals.
