MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said his government lodged a complaint with the United Nations Security Council over Ethiopia’s move to lease a piece of land along the Red Sea from the breakaway region of Somaliland.
In an interview with Al Arabiya TV during his visit to Egypt, Mohamud raised concerns that the deal could provide Al-Shabaab with opportunity to recruit new fighters, adding that the group’s spokesman had denounced the agreement within a few hours.
The Somali leader accused Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of having intensions to annex Somali territory using the deal with Somaliland as a smokescreen. Ethiopia had refused to negotiate with Somalia about how it would gain access to the sea, he added.
