MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and opposition leaders, including former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed agreed on delaying controversial plans to overhaul the constitution, Caasimada Online news website reported on Tuesday.
In a meeting held at the presidential palace, opposition leaders urged Mohamud to delay an anticipated parliament debate over controversial changes to the constitution until the completion of forthcoming Puntland election. The president accepted the request.
Mohamud has recently been spearheading efforts to speedily overhaul the constitution, in an attempt to give himself total powers by abolishing the country’s premiership position and extending his term by another year.
