KABUL (Somaliguardian) – Viral video circulating online shows Afghans hanging on to the tyres of flights leaving the country from Kabul airport and then falling off from the sky after take-off as hundreds of people scramble to board flights leaving the country, a day after Taliban took over power in the country.

At least 5 Afghan civilians have died inside Hamid Karzai international airport in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul on Monday morning, witnesses told media, hours after US military confirmed its forces had fired in the air to disperse crowds trying to board military planes out of the Afghan capital.

Taliban Says War in Afghanistan is Over

Taliban declared the war in Afghanistan over after its fighters entered the capital and took control of the presidential compound in Kabul on Sunday when the country’s president Ashraf Ghani fled to neighboring Tajikistan.

The streets of the Afghan capital were quiet on Monday, with Taliban flags seen flying over government buildings, but there were scenes of chaos and panic at Hamid Karzai international airport where hundreds of Afghans desperate to leave the country flooded the tarmac.

The United States and other western nations were scrambling to evacuate their diplomats and citizens.

Taliban Take control of Afghan Capital

Taliban fighters have taken control of the Afghan capital, Kabul and have taken over the presidential palace, after the country’s president Ashraf Ghani fled to Tajikistan.

Pictures circulated online show palace interior seemingly intact, but empty and abandoned by Afghan officials.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the group’s fighters would begin entering areas of the capital where government officials and security forces had abandoned their posts.

Senior Afghan officials, including some of President Ashraf Ghani’s advisors arrived at the VIP lounge of Hamid Karzai international airport, waiting for a flight of the capital Kabul, sources told CNN on Sunday.

Eight or nine representatives of the Taliban’s degelations from Qatar are currently sinde the Afghanistan president’s palace, holding talks with government officials on peaceful transfer of power, CNN reported on Sunday.

Among the delegations is Anas Haqqani, brother of the deputy Taliban leader Sirajuddin Haqqani, sources were quoted as saying by CNN.

Qatar’s capital hosted talks last week between Taliban representatives and Afghan government officials, along with envoys from the United States, China, Pakistan, the UN and the European Union.

Taliban Fighters Enter Kabul as US Diplomats Evacuate by Chopper

Taliban fighters have begun entering Kabul, Afghanistan’s interior ministry and the Islamist group said, hours after it seized control of the town of Jalalabad in the east of the country.

It comes hours after the group took over the key eastern city of Jalalabad, securing roads connecting the country to Pakistan.

A spokesman for the group earlier said fighters were instructed to remain at the gates of Afghan capital amid ongoing negotiations as part of efforts to offer safe passage to those wishing to leave Kabul.
