Sudan Seeks Russian Pressure Against Ethiopia over Nile Dam

Sudan Russia foreign ministers

KHARTOUM (Somaliguardian) – Sudan is seeking Russia’s pressure against Ethiopia to compel the government of the Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed to negotiate in good faith, months after African Union-sponsored talks on the Renaissance Dam stalled, with the Nile’s downstream countries blaming Addis Ababa’s “intransigence” for the breakdown of negotiations.

An official with the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Muhammad Sharif Abdullah said on Monday dispute over the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will be among issues to be discussed during an upcoming meeting in Moscow between Sudanese and Russian officials, according to Sudan Tribune.

He added that the Sudanese Foreign Ministry sent a letter to the Russian deputy foreign minister Mikhail Bogdanov to inform him about the future of the tripartite talks on a mega dam Ethiopia is building on the Blue Nile River.

The tripartite negotiations between Khartoum, Cairo and Addis Ababa reached a dead end because of the latter’s intransigence,” he added.
