MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – President of Somalia’s northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland Saeed Abdullahi Deni on Tuesday ruled out an extension of his term in office and promised a timely one-man one-vote election.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Somali federal member state, Deni pledged that he will hold the first popular election in the region in January and that he will leave office if defeated.
It came following months of turmoil and political wrangling in the region that risked plunging the region into a new round of civil war.
