MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Fierce clashes between Al-Shabaab militants and Somali government troops continued for the fourth day in central Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region, Caasimada Online news website reported on Thursday.

Drones were also bombing rural areas near the town of Mahaday where militants are thought to have set up new bases.

The insurgents crossed over the Shabelle River in an attempt to capture the town of El Baraf and other areas in the eastern part of the Middle Shabelle region. They are aimed to cut off supply routes for Somali government troops stationed in Adan Yabal town.

The contested area had been captured by government troops and allied clan forces nearly a year ago following air raids conducted by the Horn of Africa country’s international partners.
