CAIRO (Somaliguardian) – The United Nations Security Council announced it will hold an extraordinary session on Thursday over a dispute on Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam, weeks after Egypt and Sudan asked for the meeting.
Egyptian media outlets reported that the Security Council had said in a statement on Saturday that it would not be able to solve the dispute, but would invite Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan to attend the session and would encourage them to negotiate.
During the inauguration of a naval base on Saturday, Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi stressed that his government is seeking to reach a binding legal agreement on the dam in accordance with the international law.
Egypt sent a letter to the United Nations Security Council days earlier, asking for a meeting over a controversial mega dam Ethiopia is building on the Blue Nile River and supported Sudan’s request to hold an emergency session to bring an end to the crisis.
In the letter, Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry said the situation constitutes an imminent threat to international peace and security and requires consideration by the council.
