KHARTOUM (Somaliguardian) – Sudan’s military repelled an attack launched by Ethiopia’s military on an area north east of Qalabat Al-Sharqiah in Gedareft state, local media reported on Friday, months after Sudan said it had regained control of vast swathes of territory occupied by Ethiopian militias.
Sudanese forces reclaimed most of the agricultural settlements in the disputed Al-Fashaqa region, which had been controlled by Ethiopian militias since 1994.
Members of the Sudanese armed and reserve forces of the 2nd infantry division confronted Ethiopian troops, who had begun the attack, a few kilometers from the East Sindi area, to support Ethiopian Amhara farmers to cultivate Sudanese lands, military officials said.
Ethiopian troops were defeated and suffered heavy losses, before fleeing back into their border, Sudanese military sources were quoted as saying by local media.
Ethiopia has not immediately commented on the claims, which come amid simmering tensions over a mega dam Addis Ababa is building on the Blue Nile river and Khartoum said on Friday that the first filling of the controversial dam caused major problems to its waters stations.
