NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Tigray forces have released around 1,000 low-ranking Ethiopian soldiers captured during clashes with federal troops over the past months, the leader of the embattled northern region’s ruling party said on Friday, as government troops mobilize for new battle.
About 1,000 Ethiopian soldiers were released on Friday, the leader of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) told Reuters.
“More than 5,000 (soldiers) are still with us, and we will keep the senior officers who will face trial,” he said, adding that the soldiers had been driven to Tigray’s southern border with Amhara region.
Ethiopia’s federal government and Amhara authorities have not immediately commented on the assertion, which comes weeks after Tigrayan fighters paraded thousands of captured soldiers in the regional capital, Mekelle.
