MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s army has retaken a town in central Somalia’s Mudug region, days after fighters of the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab had taken it following fierce clashes, state media reported on Saturday.
US fighter jets were flying over head as troops advanced into the town of Ba’adwayne on Saturday, according to Caasimada Online website.
Photos circulated online show US-trained Somali special forces, members of the 21st Division of the army and Galmudug regional paramilitary forces outside a base in the strategic town.
Troops, with US air support, had seized control of the town on July 6 but withdrew within hours after militants launched a counter-offensive.
Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab has not immediately commented on the fall of Ba’adwayne, a town which changed hands several times over the past months.
It comes a day after a car bomb exploded outside a military outpost near the town, killing a number of soldiers and damaging vehicles, including a Zu-32-mounted truck.
