MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 9 members of military police units in charge of the security of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu were killed after their base had come under overnight attack on Friday, Caasimada Online news website reported.
The commander of the targeted base in Kahda district of Mogadishu is among the dead.
Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility, saying it killed 6 soldiers and wounded 3 others in the attack. The insurgent group also claimed that its fighters had seized weapons after overrunning the camp.
It is not the first time insurgents attack army and police bases in Kahda, a suburban district in Mogadishu which borders the Lower Shabelle region, but the group has previously killed dozens of soldiers and seized military vehicles in similar attacks.
