MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Amid escalating dispute over Somali government’s plans to overhaul the constitution, well-known political analyst Afyare Abdi Elmi called on opposition and the public to rally behind the multi-party system.
“Given our political history, societal cleavages, the passionate interest among Somalia’s political class, and the diversity of interests, ideas, regions, and clans, I believe the government’s prescription of a dual-party system is misguided,” Well-known Somali political analsyst Afyare Abdi Elmi tweeted.
“Instead, parliamentarians, opposition groups, and the public should rally behind the multi-party system outlined in the country’s political settlements and the provisional constitution. As this is not a contested issue, lawmakers should address it through the regular legislative process. When it comes to controlling the number of parties in the system, the best practice is to establish a threshold. I propose that any party receiving 5% of the vote should be officially recognized as a political party.”
