MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Wednesday attended a ceremony marking the lifting of decades-long arms embargo on the Horn of Africa nation.
Mohamud promised that his government will build the capacity of the country’s army and institutions responsible for weapons management to prevent potential diversion of lethal weapons to insurgents and clan militias.
“The lifting of arms embargo brought with a new responsibility. The Somali government will have new institutions … which will have the responsibility to improve the weapons and ammunitions management system,” Mohamud said.
