Somalia’s president urges UN security council to lift arms embargo

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday urged the United Nations Security Council to lift decades-long arms embargo on the war-hit Horn of Africa nation to help efforts aimed at fighting Islamist militants.

“This arms embargo is not contributing, at any level, to the interest of Somalia in the short term and the long term,” Mohamud said during a Security Council meeting Thursday.

“I implore you, distinguished delegates, to support our call for the complete lifting of the arms embargo on Somalia. By doing so, you will empower us to assert our sovereignty, effectively combat terrorism and build a peaceful and prosperous future for our nation.”
