Somalia arrests 25 military personnel accused of armed robbery after hours-long fighting

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s security forces on Saturday arrested 25 military personnel, including former commander accused of armed robbery after hours-long gun battle that left at least two people dead, police spokesman said.

Somali military-police in charge of the security of Mogadishu attacked the residence of Shegow, a former member of the army, triggering a fierce gunfight with troops loyal to him in Wadajir district of the capital Mogadishu.

Images circulated on social media showed security forces arresting the former military commander after ending the gun battle.

Shegow was involved in attempts to destabilize the capital and his residence was home to disloyal army officers who often carry out armed robbery and other anti-security misdemeanors in Mogadishu, Somali police spokesman Sadiq Dodishe said.

Security forces found “black money” inside the residence of Shegow and will charge him with crimes, including money laundering, he added.
