MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is set to chair Somalia security conference which will host the Horn of Africa country’s international partners, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Turkey, a week after the lifting of decades-long arms embargo, officials said.

Mohamud arrived in New York on Monday to “preside over the forthcoming Security Conference for Somalia”, the country’s ambassador to the United Nations Abukar Bale said.

Somalia will present its vision of building a strong army, capable of taking on Al-Shabaab insurgents who have been waging a war aimed at toppling the Western-backed government for more than 15 years.

“As we embark towards a sustainable security apparatus for Somalia, and to take responsibility for security by Dec 2024, in NYC today we will present our key IP; a plan that articulates our vision of building a capable, accountable, affordable SSF,” Somali national security advisor Hussein Sheikh Ali tweeted.
