ADDIS ABABA (Somaliguardian) – Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok paid a brief visit to Ethiopia on Sunday with an offer to mediate a ceasefire in the northern Tigray region.
Mr Hamdok has cut short what Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had earlier described as a two-day trip and stayed in Addis Ababa for a few hours, after Ethiopia declined his proposal, saying it was unnecessary since fighting had stopped.
The Sudanese Prime Minister was accompanied by country’s security officials and presented his concerns to Ethiopia over threats to Sudan’s security along its border with Tigray region.
Since fighting began in the northern Ethiopian region, more than 50,000 people fleeing conflict have crossed into Sudan.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed paid his first visit to Tigray’s capital, Mekelle on Sunday since it was taken over by federal troops. The PM had declared victory over the TPLF on Nov. 19 but Tigrayan rebel forces have said they are continuing to fight from mountains surrounding Mekelle.
