Somalia’s govt urges regional states to end renewed clashes between clan militias

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Interior Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi on Wednesday called on regional states to immediately end renewed clashes between clan militias in the war-torn Horn of Africa country’s central regions.

It came hours after two businessmen were killed in Dhusamareb town due to clan vendetta, shortly after fighting between two clan militias erupted in a nearby village on Tuesday.

Dhusamareb has been a base for Somalia’s president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud over the past months where he has been overseeing an offensive against Al-Shabaab insurgents in the central regions of Galgadud and Mudug.

Somali political analysts and former officials previously warned against arming clans to fight insurgents, raising fear that the weapons might be used against civilians and that such a move could pit clans against each other in renewed civil war.
