Somaliland says lifting of arms embargo on Somalia will have ‘detrimental ramifications’

Somaliland

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Authorities in the break-away region of Somaliland on Saturday raised concerns about the lifting of 30-year-long arms embargo on Somalia during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Friday.

“We believe that lifting the embargo at this time would have detrimental ramifications for Somaliland, the Horn of Africa region, and the international community,” Somaliland government said in a statement.

“This raises serious concerns regarding the potential diversion of weapons to terrorist and extremist groups, further destabilizing the region,” it added.
