UN Urges Ethiopia’s Government to End De Facto Aid Blockade

Ethiopia

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – A de facto blockade on aid to Ethiopia’s northern region of Tigray is bringing millions of people to the brink of famine, the United Nations humanitarian agency said on Thursday, warning of “looming catastrophe” as conflict in the country’s north seems set to intensify.

The UN agency OCHA called urged Ethiopia’s warring sides to allow movement of aid into the region where it said 5.2 million or 90% of the population, urgently need humanitarian assistance.

Among those in need are 400,000 people who are already facing famine conditions, the agency said.

UN OCHA called on the Ethiopian government to allow aid supplies and personnel to move into and within the country by “lifting bureaucratic impediments”, days after reports emerged of combatants looting aid.
