MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The United Nations Security Council on Saturday expressed “deep concern” about an ongoing disagreement between Somalia’s most powerful leaders – the President and his Prime Minister – and urged all political stakeholders in the horn of Africa nation to exercise restraint.
UN envoy to Somalia James Swan briefed members of the Security Council about the current situation in the Horn of Africa nation, weeks after a row, nominally over the murder of a female spy surfaced and led to an exchange of statements between the President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and his Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble.
“The members of the Security Council urged all parties to resolve their differences through dialogue for the good of Somalia and to prioritise the peaceful conduct of transparent, credible and inclusive elections within the agreed timelines and in accordance with the 17 September and 27 May agreements,” UN Security Council said in a statement.
“The Members of the Security Council urged the Federal Government and the Federal Member States to ensure that any political differences do not divert from united action against Al-Shabaab and other militant groups.”
In a statement, Security Council members reaffirmed their respect for the sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity and unity of Somalia.
It came after Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo on Thursday said he had suspended the Prime Minister’s powers to dismiss and appoint officials, marking further escalation of the wrangling between the two leaders. The Prime Minister called the President’s decision unconstitutional and in response, denied the country’s former intelligence chief – a key Farmajo ally – entry to the capital and warned airlines not to bring him home.
