MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 10 people were killed on Tuesday after fighting erupted over alleged attempts by parliament to extend the term of the region’s embattled President Saeed Abdullahi Deni.
It came after forces loyal to the opposition had been deployed in large numbers to neighborhoods of the regional capital Garowe on Monday night as part of rival military buildup. Hundreds of families fled from their neighborhoods overnight due to fear of being caught in the cross-fire.
On Tuesday, regional parliament approved constitutional amendments shortly before the fighting erupted, in what opposition alleges that it is aimed at extending term in office of region’s leader.
