MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Puntland President Saeed Abdullahi Deni on Saturday said he was committed to holding a popular vote despite strong opposition from some of the region’s political stakeholders.
Deni held a meeting with the leaders of a number of political parties for talks on the conduct of a peaceful one-man one-vote election in the semi-autonomous region. Politicians opposing his plans did not attend the meeting.
Despite calls for adhering to the traditional regional electoral model, which allowed MPs selected by clan leaders to choose a president, Deni insisted on holding a universal suffrage.
