MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –The US government said it was eagerly waiting for Dhusamareb meeting between Somalia’s political stakeholders to reach consensus over election model.
In a statement, the US embassy in Mogadishu stressed “the need for widespread consultations and genuine compromise” to advance further in bringing to an end long-standing disputes over elections.
“US Somalia is eagerly waiting for Dhusamareeb 3 meeting results,” reads the statement issued by the US embassy in Somalia.
“The need for widespread consultations and genuine compromise is key. The election model needs broad based support from FGS, FMS, Parliament and other stakeholders.”
Somalia’s international partners have recently been warning against unilateral action on all sides and the US government has now added its voice to put hefty pressure on the federal government to open consultations with federal member states and other stakeholders over the election model.
The statement also addressed concerns by opposition parties and called for timely elections without mandate extensions.
“Timely elections, no mandate extensions.” statement adds, corroborating calls by other international partners and opposition figures that mandate extension for both the executive and legislature branches of the government could lead the country to turmoil and political crisis.
Why Dhusamareeb meeting is so important now?
Over the past few days, Somali politicians and analysts have been expressing concern that the meeting expected to open within this week may not happen on scheduled date.
Yusuf Garad Omar, Somalia’s former FM said “Dhusamareb 3 meeting was unlikely to happen on its due date if a miracle was not about to turn up”.
Galmudug’s president who earlier hosted the meeting also called on all sides to avoid unilateral action and make sure that Dhusamareeb 3 has the participation of all the country’s political stake holders to expedite efforts toward reaching consensus over disputed issues including forthcoming elections.
The federal government itself faces numerous challenges after prime minister Khaire was removed a few days after Dhusamare 2 meeting was closed. Silence on whether the meeting will take place on its due date or not, raises prospect of aggravated dispute that will prove even harder to be solved as it further diminishes trust of other stakeholders in the country’s incumbent leadership.
