MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A committee formed to probe recent Mogadishu prison attack has shared its findings with the acting Somali Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled on Wednesday.
In a statement, the office of the acting Somali Prime Minister said the investigation exposed that weapons were smuggled into the prison on 8 August followed by additional ammunition and other equipment delivered to inmates on August 10, hours before Al-Shabaab inmates launched an attack on guards that lasted for several hours.
“The weapons including pistols and grenades were hidden in meat and a sack of orange,” statement reads.
The statement added that 27 people were arrested for the attack, among them 12 custodial corps members, 6 civilians and 9 inmates.
“Officers and soldiers arrested included commander of Mogadishu’s Central Prison and his deputy, who are held for facilitating the attack or showing negligence on protecting security of inmates and other nationals.”
The attack which was the first of its kind left at least 20 dead. The committee that carried out the probe did not mention the number of inmates that were able to escape during an intense shootout with security forces.
