MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Two Somali government officials were sentenced to terms of imprisonment after their conviction on theft of public funds and corruption charges.
The director general of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Guled Mohamed Ibrahim who was arrested earlier this year was given a jail sentence of 10 years for theft of public funds and corruption. He will also have to pay thousands of dollars of public funds he diverted into his own personal use.
Mr Ibrahim was fined to pay $2366 in fine after being convicted of corruption and theft of public funds under the Somali Penal Code.
The court also sentenced another official with the National Auditor office Ali Sheikhdon Abdi to 9 years in prison for theft and misuse of public funds.
The judge who was reading the verdict during the presence of journalists and relatives of the accused officials, said Abdi was convicted of stealing funds allocated for developmental projects and received a fine of $3549.
This is the second time within a week that Somali court jails officials for corruption and theft of public funds.
