MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The office of Somalia’s Auditor General said on Wednesday $21 million had been stolen from the poverty-stricken country’s public purse in a five-year period.
The office said officials, state employees from the ministries of finance, aviation and labor, and businesspeople were involved in the theft, threatening that authorities would take action.
A number of officials, including the director of the Immigration Agency have fled the capital after the office of the Somali Prosecutor General ordered an investigation of number government institutions for alleged corruption.
Endemic corruption in the war-torn Horn of Africa nation has enriched small elite of politicians and state officials but left millions of Somalis mired in poverty.
