Car bombs strike military training camp in south Somalia

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Two car bombs exploded at a military training camp in the town of Bardere in south Somalia’s Gedo region on Wednesday, officials told media.

The explosions targeted a camp where Ethiopian troops were training hundreds of Somali soldiers intended to participate in an upcoming offensive aimed at taking territory under the control of the Al-Qaeda-aligned Al-Shabaab militants.

Al-Shabaab rebels claimed responsibility, saying that one of the blasts targeted a gathering of Ethiopian military officials at the base while the other struck a reinforcement convoy.

Local media reported that there were casualties on the Somali troops receiving training at the base, but the exact figures have not been immediately known.

It comes weeks after Al-Shabaab launched a similar attack on an Ethiopian military base in the border town of Dolow, claiming to have killed at least 130 soldiers. Ethiopia said its troops had repelled the assault.
