MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –Somalia’s presidential candidates on Saturday gathered in Mogadishu for a conference on unifying their position with only a few months to go until the country’s presidential elections.
Presidential candidate, Dahir Mohamud Gele, speaking to press shortly after first day of the conference was closed, said the presidential candidates came together after recognizing that “peaceful transition of power was at risk” and the country’s “fledgling democracy was turning into dictatorship”.
As he further continued to speak, Mr Gele informed media that the presidential candidates resolved disagreements between them and forgave them each other to proceed into unifying their position to force the current administration to create an environment conducive for a fair race to presidency.
Among the issues raised at the meeting was government appointed electoral commissions said to comprise intelligence agents, state employees and popular supporters of the incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, an issue over which the opposition parties raised grave concern that it could lead to a rigged election in favor of the current administration.
The conference will continue for three days during which the opposition officials running for Somalia president are expected to unify for taking on the incumbent leader and pressure the current administration on guaranteeing a fair race and an electoral process free of manipulation, opposition officials say.
