KHARTOUM (Somaliguardian) – Egypt’s foreign affairs and Irrigation ministers have arrived in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum in an official state visit on Wednesday for talks with Sudanese government officials on issues, including dispute over Ethiopia’s mega dam.
Sameh Shukri and Mohamed Abdel-Aty have met Sudanese government officials, including the head of Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the country’s prime minister Abdallah Hamdok.
Egypt and Sudan have recently accused Ethiopia of planning to harm their citizens by starting the second phase of the construction of a hydro-electric dam it is building on the Blue Nile River, though Addis Ababa has denied the assertion.
Talks between officials of the two countries have lasted for several hours on Wednesday and the two sides agreed not to attend trilateral talks with Ethiopia unless major foreign powers, including the United States join efforts to mediate an end to the years-long dispute over the Renaissance Dam.
Egypt and Sudan are due to discuss the matter with US and European Union officials to determine the next step if Ethiopia’s “intransigence” over the dam filling continues, Saudi-based Al Arabiya TV has reported on Wednesday.
The two countries are planning to call for the formation of an international committee to assess damages caused by the Ethiopian controversial dam in Sudan and Egypt, and its impact on livelihoods of both countries populations.
