MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has announced lists of federal and regional electoral boards on Saturday, nearly a month after signing an agreement with regional presidents to hold elections within 60 days.
It comes after committee tasked with probing the electoral commissions removed 34 members said to be intelligence agents, civil servants and allies of president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
The move has come after politicians and MPs from the break-away state of Somaliland, speaking to media a few days earlier, accused president Farmajo of interfering in the process of selecting commissioners set to manage election of members of parliament representing the region.
Mohamed Hussein Roble urged members of the electoral boards to perform their duties responsibly and in accordance with the May 27 agreement reached with regional presidents.
Opposition leaders, including presidential candidate Abdikarin Hussein Guled, parliamentarian Mahad Salad and Galmudug security minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, welcomed the move and praised the prime minister’s dedication in holding free and fair elections within the set the timeline.
